I grew up on the south shore of Long Island, N.Y., and have lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for most of my adult life. I am a writer of essays, articles and stories. I've won awards from the Virginia Press Asso., the National Newspaper Asso., and the Amy Foundation for my weekly newspaper column, "Rural Pen."
When I began working at the newspaper exactly 15 years ago today, my oldest child was 18, the youngest was 12. Kids in high school, sports, plays, parties. No I can't go getting nostalgic. It's not good for me.
